closeHow dried waste paper sludge make cows happier
When Dick van de Noort started using his new stable, he was on the look-out for a more cost-efficient alternative to sawdust. Paper granules, derived from waste paper sludge, proved to be the perfect solution. The material is rather heavy, so itís not easily thrown out of the box. The granules bind well with fluids, make the cleaning of the stable easier and can be composted on the land after use.
Every three weeks, the layer of granules is relevelled. For this, our farmer requires some 16 cubes. A layer of 20 centimeters is sufficient to provide the cows with a comfortable sleeping place.
Dried waste paper sludge keeps the cows cleaner, makes for a more comfortable rest and doesnít stick to their skin as much. In a word, it is far more hygienic than sawdust. Why this would matter to you? As a result, there are less white cells in their milk, making it an even healthier product than it already is.

How exhaust heat helps a town curb global warming

closeHow exhaust heat helps a town curb global warming
Maastricht has a seriously green ambition. The aim of the city was set by city council member Wim Hazeu: halve CO2 emissions by 2050! Subsequently, a quest for a climate-neutral way to heat the complex began. Attention was drawn to the white clouds of steam billowing from some nearby chimneys. After that Sappi mill director Edward de Vries, the Dutch energy company Essent and the town council joined together to draw up an innovative plan.
By placing a heat exchanger in the chimney of the plant, they now use exhaust heat to keep the Forum’s buildings warm in winter and cool in summer. Maastricht Alderman Wim Hazeu is very satisfied and hopes the cooperation with Sappi will inspire other projects: “Elsewhere in the city centre we also have a glass and tile factory. We want to repeat the same trick there as well.”
