At Sappi, we embrace a holistic vision of sustainability as defined by the Brundtland Commission: "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." We recognize that strong, sustainable companies don't merely manage against quarterly financial targets — they invest in the PEOPLE they employ, they make commitments to protect the PLANET from the wasteful use of natural resources and they have a clear vision to achieve profitable growth and PROSPERITY for current and future generations.
Sappi Limited, our global parent, has a demonstrated track record of managing against the Three P's — People, Planet and Prosperity. In 2005 we established one of the first ever sustainability charters in our industry. Over 75% of the energy we consume in North America is produced by renewable energy and we have the lowest reported green house gases emissions amongst the major North American coated freesheet suppliers. Additionally, all of our North American mills are triple certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI).
Our sustainability platform is science-based and focused on continuous improvement. We have established five year goals and are committed to public reporting of our progress against these goals. We work each and every day at manufacturing, distributing and disposing of our products in responsible and sustainable ways. Additionally, we are committed to helping all of our partners — merchants, printers, corporate end-users and designers — understand the true footprint of our business so that they can trust that when they do business with us, they are doing business with the leader in the industry.
For Sappi, our commitment to sustainability is based on being involved members of the communities we are a part of, while ensuring the well-being and health and safety of our employees, contractors and consumers of our products. Core to this is our belief in open and constructive engagement with all of our stakeholders and employees, ensuring they reach their full potential, the communities whose role in our contribution to social and economic development is essential, and our customers — who look to us to provide environmentally responsible product offerings as well as industry expertise.
Managing and mitigating the environmental impact that arises from our activities is the cornerstone of our commitment to the planet we all share. This means reducing our emissions, conserving water and energy while decreasing waste, at the same time as protecting and safeguarding biodiversity and procuring raw materials, including wood, from trusted and sustainable sources.
Running our business efficiently and ensuring long-term profitable growth for shareholders and other stakeholders is fundamental to Sappi's own sustainability and success. Based on sound corporate governance, we comply with — or exceed — relevant laws, regulations and standards wherever we operate. We must constantly listen to our customers and not only anticipate but exceed their needs through a commitment to technological innovation and the pursuit of excellence.
