Sappi recognizes the high level of customer demand for third-party certifications. All of our North American mills are triple certified in accordance with the leading sustainable forestry certification bodies (FSC, SFI, PEFC), and we are proud to be associated with these organizations and their efforts to drive sustainable business practices:
The Forest Stewardship Council is a non-profit entity that supports environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests. FSC independently tracks, traces and identifies wood fibers from the forest through every step of the procurement, manufacturing and printing process, confirming that each supplier in the chain follows rigorous controls, management and reporting practices.
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® program is based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist. SFI® program participants practice sustainable forestry on all lands they manage, and influence millions of additional acres through the training of loggers and foresters in best management practices and landowner outreach programs.
The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization that, with forest managers, paper and timber companies and their external certifiers to assure that the world's forests are managed sustainably for the benefit of future generations.
Green-e®, the nation's leading independent verification program for renewable energy products, has certified Sappi's Cloquet Mill for the onsite generation of renewable energy. One hundred percent of the electricity consumed at our corporate headquarters in Boston is also certified renewable energy.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWaySM Transport is an innovative collaboration between the EPA and companies that provide and hire freight delivery services. This initiative is designed to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution.
The International Organization for Standardization is a network of the national standards institutes of 157 countries. It is the world's largest developer and publisher of International Standards that meet both the requirements of business and the broader needs of society.
The ISO 14001 standard is an environmental management system that helps organizations to protect the environment, prevent pollution and improve environmental performance.
As a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, Sappi pledges to follow a framework for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with 10 universally accepted principles. The principles are consistent with our global charter and are structured in the areas of human rights and labor practices, the environment and anti-corruption.
metaFore is a non-profit organization dedicated to working with businesses to create tools related to evaluating, selecting and manufacturing environmentally preferable wood and paper products. metaFore is a source of unique tools, including the Forest Certification Resource Center and the Environmental Paper Assessment Tool®.
EPAT provides buyers and sellers of paper products a consistent language and framework to evaluate and select environmentally preferable paper. This includes evaluating the source, manufacturing process and transportation — from the forest all the way through the paper mills.
Designers Accord is a global coalition of designers, educators, researchers, engineers and corporate leaders working together to create a positive environmental and social impact. The vision of the Designer's Accord is to integrate the principles of sustainable design into all practice and production.
