It is vital to Sappi that we actively contribute to our local communities and help ensure the well-being, health and safety of our employees, contractors and consumers of our products. Core to this is our belief in open and constructive engagement with all of our key stakeholders: our employees–ensuring they reach their full potential, the communities that rely upon our contribution to social and economic development, and our customers—who look to us to provide environmentally responsible product offerings as well as expertise on printing and paper. Sappi's Global Charter on Sustainable Development details our commitment to people on a local and global level:

• Promoting the well-being, health and safety of our employees, contractors, communities and consumers of our products.
• Rewarding our employees fairly and equitably.
• Empowering and assisting our employees to attain their full potential through training, personal development and career advancement.
• Promoting diversity, freedom of association and no tolerance of any form of discrimination.
• Openly and constructively engaging with our stakeholders.
• Participating in the social and economic development of our local communities.

In addition to our Global Charter, Sappi Fine Paper North America has established the following five-year goals to guide our sustainability efforts in regard to people, our employees, the communities in which we operate and our stakeholders:

• Provide training and education to all employees at a minimum of 60 hours per year per employee by 2012.
• Implement 10,000 hours of training and education in 2008 to our customers. Increase training by 10% per year to reach 15,000 hours by 2012.
• Increase our community support through education and training initiatives in both contributions and volunteer hours by 10% each year.
